In the last two weeks, five students committed suicide in Tamil Nadu. These are not only incidents for the entire state but also for the parenting community.
What is the pressure that children are unable to bear and they find it easier to embrace death. The people of Tamil Nadu are shocked by these incidents. These are heart-wrenching cases. They started from last July 13. On this day, the death of a class 12 student in Kallakurichi upset many people. Behind these developments the state educationists point to several factors that motivate the student to take up such stream steps. But somewhere the psychological pressure on these students also cannot be denied. They have to bear a lot of pressure from the society and the people around them.
Apart from this, some reasons such as the child being an alcoholic or consuming any kind of drugs also leads them towards such cases. Dr Soni said that there is a very fine line between what the students want and what they have got. When students do not get what they want due to which they become anxious and irritable.
Exam Pressure too High
Talking about two years ago, there was a big change in the pattern of studies due to the pandemic. Now things have changed after Kovid. Before Kovid, he had time to talk, he was expressive, but during Kovid, the students were jailed both mentally and physically. They too must have gone through covid phobia. During this, the increasing use of mobile phones and the Internet has been good to a certain extent, but somewhere its use has exceeded the limit, which was harmful. Students who used to study online are now attending classes and are also facing pressure. His screen time has decreased, but suddenly the exposure and pressure are also in front.
Dr. Soni also considers exam pressure as one of the main reasons behind this. He said the class 10th and 12th results were declared this week. The kind of academic pressure the students had to bear was immense. As soon as the result is declared, there is a lot of competition among the students. But the worrying thing is that this is not the pressure of healthy competition. Competition is good but it should be healthy and we are heading towards an unhealthy competition. The kind of competitive environment we are creating for the children is not good.
We are not able to provide them that kind of care.
There are many aspects related to mental health, we need to provide a healthy environment for children to talk freely. Students shy away from talking about it because they feel that they can be humiliated or made fun of. At the same time, the school should also appoint a counselor for the students. It is important to listen to them. The problem is that we have expectations, but we don’t listen to them. Listening to them solves half the problem.
